My inner luddite tends to surface on occasion and it appeared today. Seth Godin is one of my favorite bloggers and I read him daily. Why? Because he keeps everything short and to the point. In fact, his template is something I try to follow in this blog. "Less is more" is my philosophy when writing.
Seth posted
this entry and then posted
this entry the next day. Those entries, as usual, got me thinking. How plugged in am I? Well, I try to keep the writing short but when it comes to coaching, I have all the words and time in the world. I subscribe to newsfeeds that matter to me, which means I read four or five and not everyday. I have a smartphone but not the one(s) everyone talks about. I have a teenager so I have learned to text her, not actually
call her. There are numerous times when I've traveled that I have had "meet ups" and never actually called anyone on the phone. I use FB to organize gatherings and leave my cell number within e-mails I send through there. "Text me" I say if you run into an issue. It totally works. Twitter? Yeah, I follow about half the people that follow me (@nextgenradio). But, I don't live on it. It's a tool that is very effective for me and what I do and what I want to know.
But, I do pick up the phone- a land line, even. Talking on the phone is reserved for real conversation. I have to block time to do it, but I still hold on to what has become a very precious commodity: human interaction. Being a coach means you have to look people in the eye and not through a webcam. And, if you've hung out with me or set up a meeting for coffee, you'll note that when face-to-face, I only talk to you.
I hear and read a lot about people feeling overwhelmed. I feel it too.
I've been told I talk a lot. I think I don't talk, enough.
