Word Of Mouth

I've been writing this blog for well over year and I'm circling back to my very first posting and a common theme here on Knowledgewebb. This piece of nostalgia is brought to you by a quote from this article

The article was about people (like me) who travel extensively for work and therefore are in a position to recommend options for other would-be travelers. Derek Butcher, CTO for a company called Afar Media said, "It's not who you know, It's who you need to know."

Exactly.

There's a young lady, who I have yet to actually meet in person, who illustrates how this works:

She was employed as a web producer for a media outlet before quitting that job. I randomly ran into her former boss at a conference, who raved about her work and work ethic and asked if I could reach out to her. Her former boss is respected by others I know, so I did.

We talked a lot.  She's originally from Chicago and said she's moving back there. I contacted my good friend and fellow career coach for a Chicago media outlet, who in turn contacted her based on my recommendation. After she moved back to Chicago, my colleague met with her in-person at his office.

She has an interview with a hiring manager coming up soon.

As I have said, there is no magic wand and she may not end up with the job. Once you get to this stage, you still need some luck, timing and the necessary experience to be the right fit.

Still, a well-earned reputation means you can skip a lot of steps on the way to your next big thing.  If you focus your search this way, like this young lady, people will help you without you actually having to pick up a phone or send an e-mail.

You know?
