Thus Ends The Lesson

If you follow me on Facebook you'll often read about my stops on "The Great American Beer Tour."  I travel a lot and always research and plan stops at this country's, (and a few others'), microbrew houses or places where the beer selection is wide.  The conversations which organically yield after a few pints are equally varied.
Cinematographer and media trainer Tom Krymkowski and I were attending the same conference in LA and made a "tour stop" in Hollywood to discover what it's beer scene had to offer. Playing at the microbrew was a DVD of "The Untouchables," starring Kevin Costner as government crusader Eliot Ness. After being duped by his nemesis Al Capone, Eliot Ness talks to a beat cop played by Sean Connery. The scene ends with Connery walking away, saying to Costner, "..thus ends the lesson."

Tom remarked, "That's a great line.  I've said it a lot over the years."  I've said a version of it.  More like, "...and there you have it." Tom and I have spent well over a decade training mostly young journalists and lecturing to professionals about advancing their media skills and finding jobs. The former students are now moving into jobs, (when there are any to be had), while many are moving up the career ladder.  Professionals are either adjusting or finding a new path.

In "The Untouchables" Sean Connery's character served as Eliot Ness' mentor, even though he wasn't anointed as such. The beat cop was Hollywood-gruff, grey and chiseled. Costner's character was young, svelte, confident and knew he knew everything.  He didn't and Connery's mentorship helped him learn that.

If we're lucky, the lessons never really end nor should they.
