Swimming

I wrote a line today in an e-mail to Amy. It popped in my head without warning.

I said, "Mentees need to talk and then listen.  Mentors need to listen and then talk."

When asked, I always seem to state what seems obvious to me.  Stuff that seems logical.  I'd make a great Vulcan don't you think?  Another mentee asked me today to remind her how neurotic she used to be "when she grows up."  I offered to "start next week."  Still another told me this week feels trapped in her non-media job in her hometown.  She's been in the job for eight years and misses media reporting.  It's the radio reporting is the thing she's dreamed about since she was little. I've known her for 10 years.  We were on the phone a lot the last few days, going in circles.  In the end I said, "I'm not here to save you.  You have to save yourself and it has to be your decision.  We'll talk again when you decide."  Harsh?  Mentoring is a risk too.  Not everyone is a raving success story.  My hope to to have those I mentor become or remain great people and then better employees or better still, owners.  More about that as the summer goes on.

So, if you haven't joined one my chats here on Knowledgewebb and wish to this is the kind of thing you should expect.  I realize work and life can be very complicated.  I see my role here is to try and untangle the knots and laugh a little too.  Laughter never hurts...
