Serendipitous

I was supposed to be home visiting my parents. Instead I ended up spending the Sunday of my trip seated at a table among four teams of entrepreneurs in downtown Tulsa.

This event called "Startup Weekend," is hosted all over the world and funded in part by the Kauffman Foundation. By the end the third day, the four teams here will have taken what was once an idea into a full product launch, doing so in just one weekend.

How did I get here?  As with almost everything I do these days, there's a little luck and a lot of acting on impulse. A couple of days before getting on the Oklahoma-bound flight, I got a random e-mail from a guy in Tulsa about something related to entrepreneurship and the Kauffman Foundation. He happened to live in the town I was flying into, so I mentioned I was going to be visiting my family and could stop by on my way to see them.  I did, but first squeezed in some research on Startup Weekend. By the time my flight landed I was looking  for a reason to sit in a room of serial entrepreneurs in "flyover country."  I'm writing this entry from that room right now.

So, what are the business ideas the Tulsa entrepreneurs are working on?
1. JOOP - The Internet Jury of Our Peers. One future site posts a moral/ethical dilemma and someone on the team will write an answer. @ijoop
2. Captavid - Another approach to the secondary school photo process uses still images pulled from video. @captavid
3. Endcap - The "IMDB" for local music.  Local groups can build out their online portfolios and fans can maintain it. @SWendcap
4. Report2US - A better way to keep maintenance records for fitness equipment and a way for gym users to report problems. @report2us

When I left home this morning my mother asked if I would be back in time for dinner. Some things never change.

But, most everything else has- or is at least evolving- like the ideas in this room...
