Giving It Away

It's Sunday. I'm reading the newspaper and I reach the business section where there is an article about the culture of sharing within the world's biggest tech companies.  And, not only is their internal management structure about sharing across departments, they became giants by giving away much of what they create.  We're not taught success through sharing, are we?

I started thinking, "What do I give away?"  I don't mean being a volunteer in the strictest sense, but what part of my personal brand/business model is handed to someone else entirely for free? Can individuals find success by handing something they value to someone else and not charging for it?

Yes.

I write this blog for free.  I coach for free. In fact, I've never charged anyone for my time as a career coach.  As a result of that, I've stepped up into lead positions with national media and journalism associations. I've landed paid positions teaching with colleges and other entities and then charge for my time in other places. Seth Godin and Tom Peters practically give away their books by doing smart, unconventional marketing online and in person.  Prince has given away CD's of his latest work to those who go to his concerts.

The key for me? I'm very particular about whom I coach and to what groups I give away my time.  By writing this blog, Knowledgwebb holistically can help people I do not know.  And, I've decided I'm only going to spend real face-time with people I've been coaching.  I've done international fellowships and at the same time launched and ran a recognized national radio training program while working for NPR. My professional affiliations are focused and mutually beneficial. And, I'm willing to learn by taking risks. I have a mix of "giving it away" and "getting paid" for what I know how to do.

You should always do volunteer work and with entities you support. But figure out what is free and what is not, and fold those decisions into what benefits your long term strategy.

Much like Google, Facebook, Twitter and other new breed companies today.
