Expert Testimony

It's very flattering when someone who I've been coaching asks if I can serve as a job reference for them.  But, over the years I have become more and more particular about for whom I'll vouch.  Part of the reason is time.  I've found I don't have the bandwidth to write arcane letters of reference, formally drafted "to whom it may concern" or to "members of the committee."  Then, fold it in thirds, find an envelope, address it correctly, find an over-priced stamp, put the stamp on the upper right corner and then remember to drop it in the mailbox.  These days, when someone asks me I confirm it's a verbal reference, not a written one.

But, here's the key part for me.  A long time mentee and former student asked me to be a reference for a couple of jobs a few weeks ago.  She's an entrepreneur but decided to try and find a steady gig to pay bills so she can more intently focus on her business startup.  She said all the hustling wears her down. I know what that's like.

I responded that I could be a "character witness" for her.  That is, if they want to know the kind of person she is, I can easily speak about that.  I don't know her work well enough to testify on it.  In fact, for most people who ask for a reference from me, I'll explain to hiring employers about WHO my mentees are and WHY I think they are that way.  I don't talk about WHAT they are.

While at NPR and managing interns, I hired an Executive Producer.  It was crucial that I pick the right person to top the flow chart. I was serious and the leader needed to be serious too.  I saw a lot of applications from people with great tactile skills and up-to-date knowledge of how to create and distribute media.  It was more important to me to pick someone who also had leadership experience and a certain kind of temperament.  I don't get involved in anything today unless my personality can mesh with the person in charge and members of the team.

If you are looking for someone to be a reference for you find someone who can talk about your character, not just your ability to edit, write, record or produce etc.  Choose carefully and choose based on the position you are seeking.

I hope my phone rings
