Best Supporting Cast

Part of my daily routine includes logging on to Facebook and writing happy birthday messages to friends celebrating that week.

While checking my news feed one day, I saw this article about how the author, who happens to be a filmmaker, breaks down a plan for getting through life's challenges as if he were making a movie. I'd never thought about it that way. I have said many times in teaching my radio classes  that telling a story does involve scenes, characters, development and a beginning, middle and end.

There's another thing about that article that resonated with me.  Finding and keeping a career (not just a job) is all about the people you surround yourself with and "Who do you know?"  Every week I seem to say to someone, "Your next big thing is going to come from someone you may have already met."

Start by looking within your own "entourage" and really look at who is there.  Why are they there?   What kind of relationships do you have with those in your circle?  I work hard within all my networks to make sure I am connected to people who:

1. Openly discuss mutual interests and challenge conventional thinking;

2. Provide some form of friendship or support;

3. Respectfully discuss and even disagree on some things -- a lost art form today to be sure;

4. Distribute information;

5. Connect people to one another for mutual gain.

Also, my circles include a lot of people who know more than I do, about a lot of different things-- which means that while it seems I talk a lot (and I do), if you're not careful, you'll catch me listening too.

So who would be your supporting cast in your autobiography?
