I'm writing this on New Year's Day 2012 and I'm reading a plethora of resolutions, lists, suggestions, recommendations and nudges of what we should and shouldn't be doing and whatever it is, we need to start right now.  Researchers say January is a high volume month for starting or quitting stuff.  At my gym--as it is so every January--the place is packed with "New Year's Resolutioners.&...

I've been waiting a long time to borrow a quote from one of our greatest (IMHO) living American philosophers and the occasion has finally arrived. This great philosopher is, that's right, long-retired New York Yankee catcher, Yogi Berra. One of my favorite "Yogi-isms" seems to be a recurring theme in this blog.

Going to a meet-up can be a very fun and rewarding experience. You can engage in conversation with people you know or make new connections with others in your field or who are just interesting to talk with because they have taken ownership of their future.

So, what do you do?: This is probably the 1,000th attempt I have made to write something about that question.  I think this time I can add a coherent thought or two because my conference attendance "season" has ended and I won't be hearing that question nearly as much.  At least, not until the next meet-up.

Our 24/7, 365 days a year sports culture had me laughing the other day about term, "Free Agent." There is nothing "free" about being a free agent; it means only being free of the tyranny of working for a company that legally contracted you to provide services.  At a certain point in your contract, you are free to shop yourself to the highest bidder, assuming your services are...

For the past few years it seems that whenever I'm talking to someone they ask this question: "So, where are you now?"  Really? I'm standing right in front of you.  But trying to take it as an esoteric inquiry and less about where I am physically, I run down the list and they respond with, "You seem to be everywhere."  I think today it's easier to be everywhere (or seem to be everywhere),...

Here's a familiar scenario: there's a job out there that you want.  You're already working someplace else- maybe even in the same company. You want to apply, but you don't because you're terrified that someone, somehow, somewhere, someway is going to find out about your application and that information will flow up the gossip trail to your boss. And, you're afraid if your boss finds out, there will be h-e-l-l to pay.

There was a drumbeat of economic news ending the third quarter of 2010 and most of it was depressing. Unemployment remains, (as predicted by many), high.  Who ever said the jobless recovery was right, despite that term sounding like the perfect example of an oxymoron. And, I saw this story

Imagine a world where your workplace spends a lot of time and effort keeping you from quitting. Google Inc. does this because the company recognizes that if it's going to "win" it needs to have the best people it can find and that employee turnover is highly expensive.  If a company is going to spend all that money luring you in, you'd think it would spend decent capital making sure you do not leave.

It's very flattering when someone who I've been coaching asks if I can serve as a job reference for them.  But, over the years I have become more and more particular about for whom I'll vouch.  Part of the reason is time.  I've found I don't have the bandwidth to write arcane letters of reference, formally drafted "to whom it may concern" or to "members of the committee."  ...
